Sam’s always trying to make Dean choose(and frankly in situations that were a lot more dire, where they had a lot less of a support network) and he always has been when it’s something he wants. And he berated, belittled and insulted Dean when he didn’t choose the sides Sam thought he should.
Sam is more than able to choose sides when he has a REAL stake in it, when it’s something HE wants. If it involves going behind Dean’s back, going against his wishes, he has no problems with it, no matter what it costs everyone else.
