Dean has always physically moved into Mary’s touch. Every time he’s encountered any version of her throughout the show, he’s leaned into her affection like an abused and touch-starved puppy, but tonight.

Tonight.

He moved away from her. She moved to comfort him after saying she was going to leave, and he physically backed away. He couldn’t even look her in the eye, let alone let her touch him, and I just…

He must have been so close to breaking. Right on the edge of breaking down right there in front of her as she made the decision to walk away from him. Dean is a very tactile person, and to see him actively refuse physical comfort is just… painfully telling.

That was some amazing acting on Jensen’s part. The averted eyes, the tension in his body, the measured breathing. You could practically feel his heart breaking.

Also, you have to remember that just… a few hours earlier, she had been beating him, choking him, and trying to kill him. That trauma doesn’t just go away, because she was possessed when it happened. And the fact that he was trying to take care of her, to make sure she was okay when they got home to the bunker, instead of looking for some kind of apology for what happened to him is so telling.
