(lurker here, great blog; after marathoning S7-11 reading your posts has been cathartic) I hate the argument that Benny’s a deliberate threat to the bond. He stayed on the wagon, backed off when told to and even saved Sam (despite Martin). Is it cause Dean likes him and they parted on good terms that he’s a threat? Is it so terrible that Dean had a friend he cared about that Sam didn’t like? Dean loves his bro but not everything/one Dean values has to be approved by Sam. Dean is his own person.

Thank you.

You are absolutely right about everything. Dean is his own person, yes, but sadly, the show and the fandom does not treat him like that. He’s expected to revolve around other characters, his worth is measured in terms of his devotion to his family (can you see how Dean is coded here?) and if he fails to fulfill his duties toward his family(mostly toward Sam but Cas too) – he’s punished by the narrative and other characters. Of course, if he becomes all about Sam then he’s called selfish and is punished/berated for being too clingy.(Red Meat, Purge)

Benny was Dean’s friend. He saved Dean’s life, he was a redeemed vampire, he wasn’t harming anyone. When Dean came back from hell in S4, he took time to listen to Sam and thanked Ruby for saving Sam. Dean thanked a demon, bc the said demon had saved Sam’s life.  Did Sam thought to thank Benny for saving Dean’s life? No, Sam repaid Benny by sticking a crazy hunter on his trail. I mean, Sam was all happy and settled in his “normal life” but Dean was fighting for his life everyday, in Purgatory. Benny was there for Dean when Sam and Castiel had abandoned him in a place full of monsters. Benny fought beside Dean for a year, Benny earned Dean’s trust,
Benny kept Dean’s trust. He was Dean’s friend.

Dean is allowed to have friends, Dean is allowed to keep friends, Dean is allowed to have relationships outside of Sam, it’s common sense. The whole “Benny disrupted sainted brotherly bond” argument only shows us the not-so-perfect sides of the much hyped brotherly-bond. If Sam and Dean weren’t brothers, if Sam and Dean were in a romantic relationship, then people would be appalled by Sam’s “you don’t get to have friends Dean, without my permission you don’t” attitude. By asking Dean to forsake his friends/relationships in Sacrifice, Sam actually forced Dean to become all about Sam again. I think, his resentment for Benny also came from a similarly ugly place of  “how Dean can dare to have friends without my approval” mentality.

But since the show and the fandom refuses to treat Dean as a person we are stuck with this unhealthy mess of a bond- what’s more we are even told to view this bond as worthy of celebration. Yeah.

THIS!

The reason ‘Sam has to be the one to stop the darkness’ is because Dean literally cannot defeat her. He’s admitted he can’t. He lets his guard down when he’s around her. She had a hold on him. He literally cannot defeat her. That’s the reason it has to be Sam. Sure Dean can and will help but in the end it’s going to be Sam who defeats her.

deanisdarkness:

Your ask boil downs to this- Dean said he can’t defeat her, Dean
can’t overcome her influence and only Sam can defeat her.
(btw nice
circular reasoning you have going on here with your repeated use of the
phrase “Dean literally cannot defeat her”. But I’ll give you the benefit of doubt there.)

Dean said he can’t defeat her –Dean has zero self-esteem. He
also has a very shitty support system. So its no surprise that Dean
doesn’t believe in himself. So you can’t take Dean’s words as truth
here- especially when it’s known that Dean often thinks very little of
himself. Also, Dean admitted to his “weakness” regarding Amara after Sam planted that seed of doubt in his mind in episode “Love hurts”.

Dean can’t overcome her influence

Dean is bound to Amara, yes, but Dean stabbed her, tried to kill her,
and if she is still alive – its not bc of Dean’s lack of trying.
Actions speak louder than words.

Dean overcame her influence in mid-season finale so there is no reason
to think that he wouldn’t be able to do it again in future.

Dean
bore the mark, he was the lock and the key to the Darkness’ cage and
this places him in an unique position. If the bond is a two-way
street(there is no reason why it can’t be) then, it also means that Dean
can influence her in some way- this could work in his advantage. Sam has no connections to the whole Amara SL and has no advantage whatsoever.

Only Sam can defeat her –If Sam can fight devil and win, then
there is no reason why Dean can’t do the same with darkness. Dean was
shown to be far more stronger than Sam ever was, Dean was also an
archangels true-vessel, so it would fit if Dean fought and stopped Amara
with Sam’s support- reverse Swan song style. Sam doing another
swan-song when Dean sat sideways- would make terrible storytelling.

So to conclude no, Sam doesn’t have to be the one to stop the
darkness. The show could easily go with Dean being the one SL, for a
change. But don’t worry, with the
writers we have, and with the blatant Sam bias on the show, you’ll
probably get your “Savior Sam/helper Dean” finale.

i dont get why they thinks its a good not changing the BD but still portraying as horrific is a good idea. not changing it but showing at has a good/not that bad thing? ok i dont like but makes sense, at least manipulate me into thinkings this is desirable thing but asking me to regonize its toxic but accepts continued existence?? on what type of story and lack of development is this planning on showcasting in the next 2-3 or more seasons

Kripke era, s1–5: Simple and very attractive concept: The brothers love each other, look out for each other and take risks for each other. Willing to make demon deals for each other, but also willing to let go of each other to save innocent people/the world. Your basic intense attachment between two heroic characters. Tried and true, the basis of every cop/buddy show/movie from the last 5–6 decades.

Gamble era, s6–7: The brothers are pretty much united against the world (when there’s not something wrong with one of them). Willing to go to great lengths for each other, but the bro bond isn’t really explored or tested in the same way. It’s a relief really.

Carver era, s8–11?: Here’s where the issues start. Carver wants to complicate the show’s core relationship, test it, ask uncomfortable questions about it. He keeps putting it under stress and trying to force the viewers into incrementally more weird, contorted positions regarding it. The brothers ditch other people in their lives (Benny, Amelia) to maintain their unhealthy, too-close clinging to each other, they endanger countless civilians/the whole world (by not closing the gates of Hell, by releasing the Darkness and killing Death) to save each other, they even betray and violate each other (Gadreel, Book of the Damned)… It was an interesting idea to explore for maybe one or two seasons, but after almost four seasons of this, the bro bond has turned into the biggest bad on the show. The storyline doesn’t hold up for this kind of prolonged stress and it’s killing the show.

Dabb?? era? s12?–?? Could it be time for a new showrunner? Carver has a new show to run, and while it’s apparently not unheard of to manage several shows at once, second-in-command Dabb is writing this season’s finale. Hmmm???? Maybe time for a new take on the brothers’ relationship?

Cas:  *Rebels against heaven for Dean*

Cas:  *Dies six times for Dean*

Cas:  *Gives up his life, his home, his friends, his sanity, his grace, and his army for Dean*

Cas:  *Still looks at Dean like he hung the stars*

Anon:  I don’t think Cas really cares about Dean that much :/

I would love somebody to make one of these for Dean caring about Cas

Ayye, you’re in luck.  Here ya’ go (x)

What insight on Cas do you get from his fight scenes?

saltfree-archive-deactivated201:

  • in terms of his fighting style, Castiel is designed by heaven to be a killer. His fighting style is brutal, quick, and efficient. Disorient your opponent and kill them as quickly as possible.
  • image
  • Now, as a being, Castiel is capable of an intense amount of love, and he’s a very complex and layered character, but in a fight, he doesn’t hold back and will use any resources available to him to come out on top. Like, the choreography from this scene – the angel that Castiel is fighting has two swords, and a weaponless Cas manages to overpower his opponent and when he can’t reach his sword, he fucking hurls him out a window. By separating his opponent from both the swords, the other angel knew he didn’t have a chance of taking on Cas and fled the scene, rendering Cas the winner. He’s also used this tactic in 5×01. 5×18 and 6×20 are other fights where he’s able to dispatch his opponents with relative ease.
  • However, those were all fights where Castiel had the upper hand to begin with, or fights that were more or less equally matched. Castiel has also been in plenty of conflicts where his odds were not good. Castiel doesn’t particularly fear death; the saying ‘death before dishonor’ is really fitting for him. Even when he doesn’t have the upper hand in a conflict/confrontation, he’s always willing to put himself into the direct line of fire for the causes and people that he cares about. In 7×21, Hester is advancing on Dean and Castiel deliberately steps forward and draws her attention in a 180. We see this sort of behavior again and again – 5×03 and 7×23 being notable examples where Castiel’s chances of coming out of a fight alive are fairly low. In 4×16, his fight with Uriel also has a similar undertones.
  • what these types of fight scenes tell me about Cas: doing what he thinks is right is really important to him, even if it means death or injury – it’s everything to him. In these types of fight, Cas is willing to take the hits, if it means protecting the people he cares about, and if it means that his cause has a chance of prevailing over the cause of his enemies.
  • tl;dr his fight scenes tell me a lot and I get really emotional about them

It wasn’t John Winchester’s job to be liked. It was his job to raise them right. And he did.

:

How exactly does forcing your son to raise his younger brother, leaving them alone for weeks on end in shady ass motels, making his older son feel as though his life means nothing if he isn’t taking care of his younger brother AND verbally and physically (as is implied) abusing them, raising them right. He didn’t raise Dean and he didn’t raise Sam. He trained them. That’s it.

Sam doesn’t care that much for Dean? What show are you watching?! Did you miss the part where Dean died and Sam clutched his corpse crying then carried his body all the way home to summon the king of hell to try and save him?! The denial is strong with this one.

luxshine:

Oh, no, I didnt’ miss that part, back in season 10. However, I also didn’t miss the following:

Sam had no pictures of Dean in the apartment he shared with Jess, as proven by the fact that Jess didn’t recognize Dean. (pilot)

Sam did not want to introduce Dean to any of his friends, not even when Dean was risking his life to save two of them  (skin)

Sam always demeans Dean’s intelligence, making fun of when Dean shows thinking outside the box (Starts in Dead in the Water, hasn’t stopped in 11 seasons.)

Every time Sam gets hit with a “act on your instincts spell” he tries to kill Dean (started with Asylum). Not only that, he doesn’t resist, and has shoot Dean more than once.

When Dean was going to hell for saving Sam’s life, Sam was more interested in being Dean’s savior than in enjoying with Dean Dean’s last year alive.

When Dean came back, Sam was more interested in proving he was “tougher” than Dean and the “Chosen one” instead of noticing his brother’s very obvious PTSD.

Sam blackmailed Dean into retiring from hunting, forcing him to go after Sam’s dream life rather than let Dean grieve his own way.

Once he was topside again, Sam let Dean go a whole year with survivors guilt and PTSD instead of telling him he was alive UNTIL he needed Dean for a hunt (and no, “he was souless” is no longer an excuse, as the show has made canon that even if a souless person has no afterlife and the individual ceases to exist, they still know right from wrong, CAN do the right thing if they choose to AND act upon the person’s base instincts)

Because he needed Dean as a tool, Sam destroyed Dean and Lisa’s relationship.

He let a vampire turn Dean into a vampire because he was “curious”, not knowing OR caring if Dean would be able to resist the thirst until he was cured.

Didn’t look for Dean or even researched what happened to Dean after Dick Roman exploded (Despite his dialogue clearly indicated that he didn’t believe Dean was dead in the Season 7 finale)

Was annoyed and angry that Dean came back from Purgatory.

Blackmailed Dean into cutting contact with his friend (At the same time as he demeaned Dean and assured him he had no friends)

Emotionally blackmailed Dean to make sure that Dean would never put anyone as more important or equally important as Sam.

Then decided to disown his brother because Dean did something stupid to save Sam’s life.

Proceeded to ignore the MoC until Abaddon did something that was personal towards Sam (stealing souls)

Forgave Gadreel while refusing to forgive Dean.

Had no complaints about using Dean as a weapon, as long as he decided where to point him.

Ignored and disregarded Dean’s wishes regarding the MoC (Causing a lot of chaos in his path)

Blames Dean for a)his blood addiction, b) freeing Lucifer, c) releasing the Darkness.

Weaponized Dean’s memory of their mother in order to force Dean to do things Dean doesn’t want to do (this has happened since the Pilot too)

And this is just a compilation of Sam’s greatest hits regarding his brother.

So yeah, no. I don’t think Sam cares as much for Dean as Dean cares for Sam.
