While I’m angry
and disappointed that The Raid ended
with Dean apologizing to Mary, there is at least some silver lining. For one,
Dean still openly and unapologetically disagrees with Mary’s decision. Also, he
didn’t get all mushy and huggy with Mary – he’s still keeping her at arm’s
length. He definitely didn’t jump on the “we’re one happy family” bandwagon.

What I don’t
get, though, is why Dean would say “I know you won’t make my lunch or
kiss me goodnight.” That has never
been what his issue with Mary was (though Sam insinuated it, for some weird
reason, in 12×12 by saying Mary’s “not the kind of mom who’s gonna
stay home and make us chicken soup”, so maybe that’s how the idea for this
apology got planted in Dean’s head.)

Dean didn’t
have any problem with Mary not cooking or holding hugfests. His issue – and he
has been consistently very clear about this – was that Mary was preferring
other people’s company over her sons’, that she wasn’t making any real attempts
to get to know her sons so they’d stop being strangers to her (all the
initiative came from Dean), and also that Mary’s been lying to her sons
for months and almost got them killed.

So when the writers try to turn all Dean’s justified complaints into a “Dean is a sexist who wants to
keep his mom at home so she’d cook for him” thing, it simply doesn’t work.
