Moral Outrage Is Self-Serving, Say Psychologists

Some people buy expensive cars; other pick up bullhorns. 

That’s so much of the do gooder mentality. From plastics recycling to smart cars to hashtags on twitter and the protests. The vast majority of it is just to show how great a person they are with no substance to what they are doing and no real positive effect, usually more negative. It’s all about feeling self righteous without taking the effort to understand the issues. Lazy activism is completely self serving and does nothing to improve the situation at hand.

Doing good and helping others is really important. However, the value in good actions and concerns decreases when those actions and concerns are self-serving to one’s own status as a “good person”.
