Personally, I hope Sam didn’t tell Dean, because Sam might be too blinded by his “I’ve been there” sentiment to see it, but I’m sure Dean would recognise that Mary abandoned him to go on a crazy revenge quest. For Sam, the natural conclusion is “Mom doesn’t really hate hunting, so she’s going to come back.” But Dean’s conclusion might be, “Mom’s never really cared about me, so why should she now?”

Yeah, Dean thinking “Mom’s never really
cared about me” was my first reaction to the revelation about Mary hunting too,
and I think it is most probably the conclusion Dean would come to.

This was basically just me
trying to find a silver lining to the whole thing… and not really succeeding
