the demons in s1-3 were super reclusive, scary, smart, and powerful, like damn okay think about meg and azazel and shit so there is a huge contrast between then and now

i think when the gates of hell were opened at the end of s2, everything changed. before they were open, only the most cunning and powerful demons could manage to get out of hell. like meg said–hell is hell, even for demons, and she had to try so hard to come back and get her revenge.

but after they opened even the stupid incompetent demons who are the souls of easily corruptible humans who sold their soul can get out because theres no longer a guard in place. its a waterfall instead of droplets. so you get masses and masses of average demons who are just stupid violent creatures
