What evidence is there that John “did his best”?

Usually when this comes up, it has to do with making them aware of the supernatural. That’s what I always understood.

I think there’s a giant divide between “making them aware of the supernatural” and how John chose to abuse and neglect his sons.

That argument always strikes me as accepting John’s POV unquestionably. Like, how does leaving Dean alone caring for Sam for extended periods while John hunts remotely prioritize his children? Doesn’t that actually put them more at risk?

I feel like John’s choices in Something Wicked really says it all. There’s simply no excuse. He could have done a ton better (like not emotionally abuse and neglect his children), but that would require he put gus personal vendetta second. And so yeah, he did his best…to get the revenge he wanted. Not for his children.
