Anyone else feel they jumped the shark when they brought Mary back?

But really, I thought they jumped the shark when they made God a character, and to a lesser extent, when they preemptively destroyed the legitimacy of any subsequent big bad by having the literal manifestation of all evil be a villain. Sweet shit those were such bad choices.

I’m really hating this trend where nothing is allowed to be mysterious or sacred. Not that I give much of a damn for Sam, but I’m not liking this thing they’re doing where they took God away from Sam and now they’re taking Mary away from Dean.

It just shrieks that these writers/showrunners/etc are so inept that they’re incapable of writing without hacking off pieces of the show and using them as fuel for the drama-fire. And that was the entirety of S11′s mytharc.

Something I’ve always really liked about Supernatural was the way they put John and Mary in a fairytale-esque light, and they achieved that by keeping their distance. While John was around in S1, his appearances were sparse and their choices of actor and direction gave him a sense of gravitas. Both parents were shown to be capable of things that shouldn’t really have been possible- Mary was sane as a ghost after 22 years and capable of fighting poltergeists; John did not break after 100+ years with Alistair and crawled out of Hell, and became renowned as one of the best “demon hunters” ever without even having the use of a Devil’s Trap. And for both, they were mysteriously unreachable whenever the Winchesters had the apparent means of contacting them to preserve that. Until now.

Part of the horror of the MoC was the fact that we didn’t really know what the fuck it was…. While eventually letting The Thing behind it loose was an inevitable part of the arc, there was a way to do that and a way not to do that. The way to do it was maintain that mystery, make The Darkness some horrible nebulous evil. AKA, NOT give it a fucking face?????? S11 should have been the creepiest season yet but as far as I know it didn’t even come close.

The idea that they were able to defeat it was idiotic as well. It gives them too much power. Bullshit that the root of all evil even God had to lock off could be fucking talked down. And that reminds me of all that “Hey let’s try humanizing fucking Lucifer also” bullshit too. My God what a season.

While the writers had to jump through a lot of hoops to keep God-as-Character out of the show in S5, it was worth it, because anything less is making something unknowable knowable. They would have fallen short no matter what they did (And BOY DID THEY) because it wouldn’t be true to THE BIGGEST mystery of the human experience. I have a lot of theological problems with it as well even disregarding what they actually had him do, and beyond the sheer idea of having God as a character, but I won’t get in to those in detail now. What’s important is that cementing him as a character with specific motives destroyed any wiggle room with interpreting the hows and whys of their universe being so different from ours and how that is justified in an ostensibly Christian context. Technically they could have fixed that by going the One-Above-All route like Marvel does but they didn’t, and they couldn’t at this point with all the groundwork S4-5 laid. So they shouldn’t have.

The trap they keep falling into is that the easiest way to utterly destroy a concept is to turn it into a character.

This.

The Darkness and God being physical characters is not only a determent to the narrative, it makes no fucking sense from a mythological perspective.

God having a sister has no mythological basis within the Abrahamic mythos. None. The whole point of Abrahamic mythology is that there is one God. It is literally impossible for God to have a sister deity. Even Chuck being God doesn’t work. In Judaism and Islam, God does not and cannot have a physical form. While Christianity does allow for God to take physical form, ‘Chuck’ does not work their either because God ‘The Father’ is not the physical incarnation of God, God ‘The Son’ is.

That aside, to even come close to a mythological base for Chuck and Amara, you have to either go way back to ancient Canaanite lore (which is likely where the Abrahamic mythos comes from) which had a goddess of the dawn called Shahar

and a god of the dusk called Shem or to Zoroastrianism (which had influences on Second Temple Judaism and Christianity) which has Ahura Mazda, the god of creation and Angra Mainyu, the god of destruction.

If Chuck and Amara were said to be any of these deities, it would work and would actually be a nice a commentary on how religions evolve over time, but Chuck and Amara are not any of these deities. Chuck is Tetragrammaton who, despite all the lore saying he shouldn’t, has a sister. And he eats bacon even though both

Kashrut and

Halal ban pork….

After 12.04 with stigmata now randomly being a thing, I’m worried Jesus is gonna show up as an actual, literal character now. That’s the last thing spn needs and I’m somebody who reads Jesus figure meta into Dean. Like imo, Dean at this point serves the same basic function as Jesus. We don’t need actual!Jesus. Not to mention, unless he where just a human who was one of Chuck’s Chosen or at best Gabriel’s nephilim, Jesus would fit into the mythos less than Amara does at this point because Chuck is God’s incarnation and Michael was supposed to fight Satan.
