I hate when they do that. Dean says something emotional, desperate even. 

And Sam’s response turns into a reprimand of something Dean never meant, nor even said. Dean did NOT say Mary was a “thing”. He did NOT depersonalize her. He was obviously talking about the fact that they had their mother with them.

But the way Sam phrased it was like, “Oh, Dean, but don’t you know you’re talking about MOM! How can you call our MOM a “thing”! You insensitive klutz, you. I, on the other hand, am really sensitive to our MOM’s needs and to her pain and her struggle. See how I don’t call our MOM a “thing”?”

Ah, well, she’s gone. Problem solved. (Not.)
