whhhyyy does dean have to be smart though why can we not for once have a character that isn’t actually that clever, at least not in an academic or texbook way, that is still totally lovable and admirable? sometimes i feel like the fandom (and the writers??) just forthrightly attaches any and all conventionally-good qualities to their favourite characters until no character is different from another

dean is smart and clever?????? that is a canonical fact??????????????? there shouldn’t be any room for argument there whatsoever because he may not be as hoity toity academically-minded as sam very obviously is but he’s INCREDIBLY SMART AND CLEVER?????????????????

1) he’s well-read?????? (see: 4.14 “like greek myth siren? the odyssey?”; 4.18 “‘slaughterhouse-five’ vonnegut or ‘cat’s cradle’ vonnegut?”; 5.22 “yeah, swell, bukowski.”; he makes several references to various bible stories and he knows them)

2) he’s a fucking genius when it comes to engineering???? (he puts together the impala on, like, a bi-weekly basis; 1.04 he built an EMF receiver out of spare parts; 3.13 he built the hidden EMP that wiped the ghostfacers’ hard drives; 5.10 he helped make a bomb out of hardware store material; he made his own sawed-off shotgun in the sixth grade; 8.20 he puts a GPS tracker in charlie’s phone within like, thirty seconds of having it)

3) he’s a really quick learner??????? (2.18 he figures out all of the equipment & terminology involved in being a PA within hours; 4.17 he does days of work in corporate finance without, y’know, actually having studied it, 8.14 sam literally says that dean is a genius, especially when it comes to lore – lore is an incredibly complex and difficult subject)

4) he makes really clever plans?????? he’s a HUNTER (1.16 he connects the dots to make a pattern; 1.10 he gives sam an unloaded gun; 2.06 he uses the cement truck to seal a spirit; 3.03 he throws the rabbit’s foot to bela; 5.08 trapping gabriel in the holy oil; 6.11 choosing to flatline in order to communicate with death; 8.11 talking battle strategy regarding charlie’s war map; etc etc etc he has to think on his feet so much & does a lot)

like what is this fandom-wide fascination with claiming that sam is the brains and dean is the brawn of the operation like WHAT IS THAT that’s just disrespectful to dean’s character because “[he’s] not a grunt” (!!!!!!!!), he’s really intelligent. just because he doesn’t flaunt it all the time (and just because one certain pair of writers is apparently super into the whole bumbling hunter dean thing) doesn’t mean he isn’t thank you and goodbye
