Dean Winchester | 11×21 All In The Family

Jensen, as usual, killed this monologue, but this entire speech should have been Sam’s.

  • Because SAM just this season thought he was getting divine visions and it was Lucifer.
  • Because SAM endured centuries in the cage and God knew about it and did nothing.
  • Because SAM nearly died trying to close the gates of hell, and thought he was being purified.
  • Because SAM’S father abandoned him too, shut him out when he tried to live his own life and spent his last moments of life telling Dean that he might have to kill him. Dean doesn’t corner the marketing on daddy issues.
  • Because SAM has prayed his entire life with no real answers.
  • Because SAM had to rescue and live with his torturer and the writers might not think that it’s worth a mention over Dean and Chuck bonding over bacon or Kevin telling DEAN that he looks stressed, but I do.
  • Because SAM’s faith has been put through horrific tests and has rarely wavered.

Can I just point out how rude this post is? If you want to air your frustrations, please make your own post. Next time refrain from polluting a perfectly nice post that’s centered around Dean and showcases Jensen’s brilliant acting.

I’m not even going to get into the reasons why this particular speech and scene was tailor-made for Dean. But if any other Dean fan wants to do so – have at it.

::raises hand::

Because unlike Sam, who was so prideful that he thought God would deing to speak to him, which means Sam would have focused on his own problems and own feelings rather than on the fact that God abandoned EVERYONE, Dean never thought he was important enough to matter to God… And the fact that he was right, that when he said that God didn’t care, he was right, makes it more devastating than having someone who just repeated “but he cares” realize that no, God doesn’t.

Because no matter how much we repeat about that 180 years of torture that Sam doesn’t even remember anyway (in the sense that he doesn’t remember the pain, even if he remembers the experience), that doesn’t mean its more important than the billions of people who died without having a second chance, who were tortured and turned into demons for deals that may not have been evil. And while SAM wouldn’t care about them enough to mention them? Dean would.

Because Sam only wanted to close the gates of Hell to stop helping people (hunting), and was convinced not to do so when his brother promised that nothing would ever be more important than Sam. While Dean has always known that helping others is the best thing you can do with your life. And still, Dean was not talking about his own pain, or Sam’s pain, or Cas’s pain. Because the speech was not about an individual, but about humanity (Will come back to this later)

Because Sam’s father never abandoned Sam, to the contrary, kept watch on Sam even when Sam didn’t want him around. Kept Sam’s school mementos even when he was against said school activities, and told everyone who was willing to hear how proud he was of his Sammy.  Sam’s last moments with John had John apologizing to Sam, and making sure Sam didn’t know about the demon blood. John’s first priority was always Sam. So his daddy issues are born out of misunderstanding his father, not about being used as a tool to be discarded.

Because Sam’s prayers were always about answers for SAM, and  out of being told that there would be answers. Dean never prayed becuase he knew that the one prayer that mattered (for his mom to be saved) was never answered. Dean doesn’t ask for miracles, becuase he knows he is not going to get them.  And thus, his speech was not “why didn’t you answer ME” but “why didn’t you answer THEM”

Because Sam doesn’t remember (or care) about his torture because the show gave him closure. Just as it give him closure for his souless actions, and for his time with Gadreel. Because Dean has had to work with those who have been more cruel to him than any torutre Alastair made (Sam himself, have we forgotten?) and told he’s not a person for wanting to have some time for himself. And again? Sam wouldn’t be in this position if it wasn’t for Sam’s own pride. Which has nothing to do with the speech itself. Or did these people want it to be “Why are you forcing me to live with Lucifer?” rahter than “Why don’t you care about all those people who are innocent and love you?” rather than “Why are you not listening to your children who were lost without you and were forced to start an apocalypse?”

Because Sam’s faith has never been put through tests becuase at the end, he is always forgiven. He is always given an out. He is always purified.

And THIS speech was not about SAM and his suffering. Was about Humanity.

Was about how OTHERS were left alone. How the people who pray and go out on their own business, are still victims not only of monsters but of accidents. Of poverty. Of cruelty.

This speech is not about the Winchesters. Is about Humanity.

And the only Winchester who is selfless enough to say it without being a hypocrite? Is Dean.
