deanisdarkness:

I have seen a few posts around stating that Dean’s behavior in Red Meat was completely IC for him. I disagree. Let me tell you why with a couple of examples.

Season 2. Dean sold his soul in exchange for Sam’s life, yes, but look at it through Dean’s eyes. Dean felt he was living on borrowed time. Dean felt guilty bc John had sacrificed himself for Dean. So Dean thought, he’d do the same for Sam- just like how Dean’s father had done for Dean- like passing on a favor.
Dean was very much in grief- but it was understandable, Dean loves with
all his heart and it would have been callous of him if he was unaffected after Sam died.

I’m not saying that Dean wasn’t shattered or affected – but to claim that Dean made that deal entirely out of his undying love and devotion to Sam- is quite incorrect.

Season 6. Dean didn’t die for Sam- Dean took a calculated risk to find a solution for the whole Soulless Sam issue. This is a horror show, Dean is a hunter, he’s known to take calculated risks- heck both boys take such risks every time they go out on a hunt. Dean tried to bargain with Death -and when presented with Sam and Adam- of course he chose Sam. Him choosing a half-brother who he never knew instead of Sam- wouldn’t make any sense. But see, he asked for both of their souls-so no, he didn’t give up or forget Adam or go all “omg I only want my Sammy” in the first place.

Also, when the deal with Death failed, Dean was completely prepared to kill Soulless Sam- at least that was how Jensen played that scene. This was also consistent with Dean’s previous “I’d let Sam die before I see him turning into a monster” stance. Dean was admittedly unhappy over Sam jumping into the cage, but he went on and found his place with Lisa and Ben.

Compare this to the events in Red Meat. And you’d see how fan-service-y, over-the-top and stupid the whole depressed Dean dying for Sam thing was. This is why I don’t even want to analyze Dean’s (or Sam’s) actions in this episode- bc you see, they were taken right out of a stupid hurt!sam fanfic.(Well, I  could maybe say that Sam blackmailed Dean into being all about him in Sacrifice via his “I’m the only one that matters Dean” speech, but even that only serves to show how OOC Dean’s current actions are w.r.t his pre-Carver actions.)

So no, Dean loves his brother, Dean cares for his brother, but this last episode was really not consistent with last 10 seasons of characterization and I’m sick of so called “dean!fans” telling me otherwise.
