Here we are again. Supernatural is once more showing us how little Dean cares about himself–this after the suicidal Dean at the beginning of the season. They keep bringing it up, but never fully tackle the subject full on–not even with the characters. I mean, shouldn’t Sam have had some reaction to hearing Dean say he doesn’t care what happens to himself? Something should have been said even if he doesn’t think it’ll help.
Yeah, we all know Dean feels this way–I think Sam has known for a while–but it’s still heartbreaking to hear Dean voice this and nothing is said or done to show that the writers take the subject seriously. It’s even more heartbreaking that none of the other characters seem concerned about it. I really don’t see what the point of bringing it up over and over is if there isn’t going to be a discussion about it or something. Why does the show ride the line of showing us a very depressed Dean who doesn’t care if he lives or dies only to abandon the subject in the very next episode.
I guess this very serious subject is once again being used to show us why Dean is going to make some decisions that are yet to come–establishing his state of mind. I can’t see any other reason for those lines to be said otherwise. Still, it would be nice to see some kind of progress on this subject that isn’t just a band aid fix. I guess, as someone who is depressed, I’d like to see the subject explored and see Dean find some healing of the underlying problem–he doesn’t care about himself, doesn’t think he’s important, doesn’t think he has value in and of himself.
To be honest, though, I think this mindset is such a part of who Dean is, I don’t think it could ever be healed completely. I also don’t believe the writers have any clue how to even tackle such a notion outside of bringing it up when its convenient to show Dean’s state of mind. It frustrates me, though, it really does. It would be a step in the right direction if Dean’s family would show some concern over this dangerous subject and treat it like the problem it is instead of just glossing over it or sweeping it under the rug.
Dean doesn’t need to be “cured” but the people around could at least about it beyond how his feelings inconvenience them and finding ways to make it all about themselves. It’s just absolutely amazing how deeply concerned Dean is for everyone else and how little they really give a damn about him, it’s either ignore it or find a way to twist it around to make it about themselves. His whole damn family does this, his father, his brother even his mother.
