Apparently, he’s a “hero” because he could hold a door open. That’s about the gist I got from that post. And hell, yeah, holding doors can make someone a hero but… I think Sam doesn’t quite measure up to Hodor.

There were two things about that quote that bothered me:

1. That Sam is defined as the hero ™ of the show.

2. That Sam being praised as a hero by the narrative is supposedly something rare on the show.

Whether Sam’s action measures up to heroism wasn’t really my focus.

If find it funny that the quote claims that Sam is never written as a hero and yet, by them asserting that Sam is, in fact, a hero, that would imply that Sam has been written as a hero in some context at some point. But I guess if Sam isn’t explicitly and constantly shown to be Saint Samuel of His Perpetual Martyrdom with a crucified hero shot just to drive the point home it doesn’t count.

Sam can be explicitely shown every season to be Saint Samuel of His Perpetual Martyrdom and his fans will still not be satisfied enough. I mean, how many times has the show already acknowledged Sam as a hero? And this quote emerged nonetheless?

You have to remember that last season the writers decided to treat Dean like an actual protagonist of the series by giving him narrative focus so automatically the last ten seasons of Sam’s narrative are null and void.
