…But. Wasn’t apple pie her thing? Ain’t that why Dean loves it so much?

Yes, but Dean was 4 when she died… she could have been buying the pies at a bakery and warming them up and he would never have known the difference. Or he could have invented memories of her making them (I’ve had the same experience with my memories of my dad who died when I was 14 – I’m not sure now how much was real and how whether I over-exaggerated things or remembered things the way I wanted to remember them, with a rosy, perfect veneer over it all). It’s like the pedestal Dean has kept her on since then is being dismantled piece by piece and I AM SO HERE FOR THIS.

Sometimes (pretty often actually, speaking from experience haha) moms buy stuff instead of making it from scratch, it’s real, it happens, and it makes Mary so much more relatable.

Yeah. It happens. But I feel that, if Dean knows damn near everything that went down between John and Mary before he was even born, he’d know – either through memory or John – that his mom didn’t make pies, she just popped ‘em in the oven for a few minutes. Mmm, store bought pies. Like mother didn’t make. *thumbs up*

I think John presented a pretty idealized version of Mary, too. So even if he did know that she just bought the pies (which, if she was the homemaker and did all the shopping, he might not know) he might not have told Dean that. 

That’s a good point. Maybe Mary made a pie from scratch now and then and that’s what John/Dean remembered, while the times they were store bought got kinda glossed over in their memories.

And yeah, maybe John was clueless about how Mary procured the pies as well. Maybe she deliberately tried to present that perfect, normal wife & mother image because that’s who she wanted to be – we know she didn’t want to be a hunter once she had a family. She actively tried to separate herself and her family from that life.

After all, when Dean asked about her meatloaf in this very episode (implying he thought it was homemade) she admitted she bought it pre-made.

Dean is about to have all of his childhood memories deconstructed basically. The things that he thought he knew about his mother and the person Mary actually is are going to be very different things. He remembers a mother through the eyes of a 4 year old and by stories told by his dad. How much do you remember about being 4? It’s all reconstruction rather than true memory.

It’s going to take their internal family myth and tear it apart and rebuild mary from a sacrificial catalyst character, from an idea, and turn her into a character in her own right. I am honestly kind of curious as to where it goes from there.

Though i don’t like how easily she fell back into “mother” role. toward two men older than she is…still.

I have a feeling her biggest problem is going to be dealing with losing John. She loved him enough she would have sold her soul for him if that’s what Azazel would have taken. And we saw what losing her did to him. This story has potential.

Yessss, all of this. As to your last point, with Mary’s biggest problem being grieving for John… I’m a bit worried with all the speculation I’ve seen of Mary being a possible vessel for Lucifer, and with Lucifer’s penchant for impersonating dead lovers to get his vessels to say yes that he’ll trick Mary into saying yes to ‘John’. Which, while it would be awesome to have JDM back on the show, would absolutely destroy the boys and it’s kinda terrifying.
